How Type 34 side marker lights are supposed to function

The side marker lights on the Type 34 (as well as other VW 1500s) were originally designed as parking lights. With the key out of the ignition, you simply used the turn indicator lever to turn on the left or right marker.

This was a feature seen on higher-end German automobiles in the 1960s, so it's fitting that VW included them on the "upscale" Type 3 models.
